Episode 9: What I Like About You

Welcome to the February Episode of the SF Squeecast! Episode 9, What I Like About You, AKA The Awkward Episode. In this episode, recorded on February 4, we have discarded our cardinal rule and talked about each others’ work, doing our best to make each other squirm in honor of Valentine’s Day.

It is truly awkward. We hope that you enjoy it.

Our discussion featured Squeecast regulars Elizabeth Bear, Lynne M. Thomas, and Catherynne M. Valente, along with our special guest Scott Lynch, the author of the Gentlemen Bastard Sequence of novels, beginning with The Lies of Locke Lamora.

In this episode we discussed works from each Squeecaster that we had consumed. Their websites are linked on our sidebar, so we’re just gonna list ‘em.

  • First we talked about Paul Cornell’s Doctor Who work, and his fiction work, including his short story “Secret Identity” and the novelette “The Copenhagen Interpretation” (plus a couple of bonus Doctor Who New Adventures novels). I should note that I misspoke about the season in which “Human Nature/The Family of Blood” appear: they are in the THIRD series of the New Series, not the second. I also happened to reverse the sexualities of the main character in Paul’s short story that appeared in the Masked anthology, “Secret Identity.” It’s a good story, but I read it over a year ago. (Sorry, Paul.)
  • Then we talked about the works of Seanan McGuire, specifically Feed, Discount Armageddon, and her album Wicked Girls. Please note: WE TOTALLY SPOILED THE END OF FEED to talk about the awesome execution of it. If you don’t want to be spoiled, you’ll need to fast forward about 5 minutes. You have been warned.
  • Lynne M. Thomas was on the hotseat next, as Squeecasters discussed Chicks Dig Time Lords and Apex Magazine and the SF Archives at NIU.
  • We discussed Cat Valente’s work next, specifically Deathless and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, and The Orphan’s Tales.
  • Elizabeth Bear was next, and we talked about The Stratford Man, The Jenny Casey novels, and the New Amsterdam stories.
  • Finally, we put Scott on the hot seat, discussing The Lies of Locke Lamora, and making him answer embarrassing questions. There were sharks involved.

This Very Special  Episode of the SF Squeecast was recorded with Squeecast regulars Catherynne M. Valente, Elizabeth Bear, Lynne M. Thomas,  Seanan McGuire, and Paul Cornell with Very Special Guest George R.R. Martin!!!

In this episode we talked about:

We also asked George our silly questions.

Unfortunately, all of this frenzy of activity, with George joining us via telephone and the rest of us over the web, means that you might have a little trouble hearing what’s going on from time to time.  We kinda strained our internet connection. A bit.

We are REALLY VERY SORRY, but it could not be helped. We did try.

That being said, we had a lovely time chatting with George, and we do think that this was totally worth some minor sound hiccups.
