Welcome to the September Episode of the Hugo Award-winning SF Squeecast! Episode 16 is called “Live from Chicon: Keeping It Classy on the Eve of a Hugo Award.” This episode brought together for THE VERY FIRST TIME EVER IN PERSON the SF Squeecast regulars Elizabeth Bear, Paul Cornell, Seanan McGuire, Lynne M. Thomas, and Catherynne M. Valente with Very Special Guests Jay Lake and Sarah Monette! In this episode we squeed about:

Jay also answered our silly questions.

OPEN SQUEE THREAD: The Squee-A-Long

Welcome to the very first Open Squee Thread for the SF Squeecast, where you can share your squee with the world (or at least, our listeners)!

Rules for Open Squee Thread:

1.Be squeeful about the work of others. Suggestions may only come from those who are not directly involved in the creation of the object of squee. No suggesting books, media, etc. where you yourself are the creator/writer/editor/producer. Any item so suggested will be ignored. And possibly deleted, if the moderator is feeling cranky.

2. It’s not enough to tell us that you think something is squee-worthy and just list it. Tell us why. This is your chance to intrigue our listeners into checking something out. Be original. Be funny if you can. Tell us in glorious detail how and why your suggestion is made of awesome.

3. Do not harsh the squee of others’ suggestions. Squee is intensely personal; harshing someone else’s squee is not cool. If someone suggests [x], DO NOT follow up with “no, [x] is TERRIBLE. You should look at [y] instead, which is way more awesome.” If someone else’s suggestion is not your cup of tea, post your own without slamming someone else’s.

Hi!

So, since the Hugo win, we’ve had a good strong handful of inquiries as to how we select our items for squeeage, our guests, and the like. We’re glad you’re interested! This is something that we’ve discussed in passing before, but until now, our policies about how, why, and with whom we squee were pretty informal. We’ve taken the step of formalizing them and listing them on our “About” page.

For your convenience, I’m reproducing the salient points here:

We work in a show-and-tell format, with contributors selecting materials to discuss on the podcast. Contributors will not discuss or promote their own work, or the work of those appearing on the podcast in that episode. We did one very awkward episode where that happened. That’s all you get. Because awkward.

Please note that unlike regular review podcasts, the SF Squeecast does not accept review copies, ARCs, or the like, in an effort to keep our inboxes less cluttered, and our choice-making as fair as possible.

All guests or interviewees appearing on the SF Squeecast are by direct invitation only.

Thanks for your understanding. :-)

That said, for those of you who want to talk about things that make you happy, we hear you! We’ve come up with a way to let you squee along with us. We will be hosting an Open Squee Thread on this blog periodically. Our first Open Squee Thread, along with the rules for the thread, will be posted shortly.
